How the G21 Pillar Groups have evolved

In 2002 regional leaders volunteered to bring together and lead the region's most experienced and influencial individuals in a range of interest areas to prioritise and address issues and projects of regional importance.

These "Pillar Groups" identified Priority Projects in their area, which became the basis of the first G21 Strategic Plan (2003). Of the 24 projects identified in the Plan, 21 have since been delivered or significantly advanced. Many additional projects were (and continue to be) identified and addressed during this time.

Sustainable growth strategy

After this initial success, it was agreed that a framework was needed to facilitate 'cross-pillar' collaboration and to ensure that future projects undertaken were of the highest possible strategic value to the future of the region.

Following two years of extensive research and consultation the G21 Geelong Region Plan – a 50 year sustainable growth strategy - was launched late 2007. The Plan provides a framework for all stakeholders to work collaboratively, efficiently and strategically for the sustainable future of the region. In addition, the Plan identifies short and long term regional challenges and opportunities and presents strategic responses in five directions:

Direction 1. Protect and enhance our environment

Direction 2. Create sustainable settlements

Direction 3. Strengthen our communities

Direction 4. Refocus our economy

Direction 5. Make it happen

Continuous Improvement

After the delivery of the Geelong Region Plan a continuous improvement process was undertaken to review the effectiveness of the G21 Pillars in delivering the Plan's objectives. A number of recommendations were made in regard to Pillar structure and communications which were implemented throughout 2008.

Pillar activities are reported on this website, in our annual Report to the Region and in our regular newsletters 'Snapshots' and 'e-News'.
