Regional Renewable Organics Network – Emily Rahles-Rabula
Emily Rahles-Rabula delivered a briefing on the proposed Regional Renewable Organics Network (RRON) at Barwon Water’s Black Rock Water Reclamation Plant, working with Borough of Queenscliffe, Colac Otway Shire, City of Greater Geelong, Golden Plains Shire, Surf Coast Shire and the neighbouring Wyndham City Council to process food and garden waste from households across the region.
A six week community engagement phase is taking place over October-November. Please visit www.yoursay.barwonwater.vic.gov.au/RRON
A further phase of engagement is planned to take place in mid-2022, addressing feedback from the current consultation phase and exploring the proposal in greater detail.
New Environment Laws: Environment Protection Act 2017 – Carolyn Francis
Carolyn Francis provided an overview of changes to Environmental Protection laws, resulting from the 2017 re-write of the Environment Protection Act (replacing the 1970 Act). Please refer to the slide pack for more details.
Members discussed the idea of a regional emissions reduction target for G21, raised by Vicki Perrett. There was broad support to explore the possibility of a regional plan/strategy/roadmap, starting with gathering existing information, mapping out the region’s emissions profile, existing commitments, challenges and opportunities. The BSW Climate Alliance has commenced some of this work, however is still in the start-up phase. This is also a cross-pillar opportunity.
