PORT OF GEELONG

GeelongPort is Victoria’s largest bulk cargo port and a major state asset.

It manages 25 per cent of Victoria’s total trade, including 50 per cent of the state’s fuel supply.

More than 600 vessel visits per year generate $7 billion for the economy supporting 1,800 jobs.

Strengthening critical road and rail links, channel deepening and preserving adjoining land for port activities and related industries are essential to the port’s growth.

In 2022, GeelongPort will become an interstate visitor gateway when the Spirit of Tasmania begins service, driving growth in regional Victoria’s visitor economy and freight industry.

Investment in infrastructure to support better amenity, freight and tourism access is urgently required to accommodate the surge in visitor and freight movement.

GeelongPort is privately investing $135 million to build a dedicated passenger and freight terminal, which will:

• create 75 construction jobs and 100 ongoing jobs.
• grow freight and export opportunities for Victoria and Tasmania.
• assist in boosting tourism expenditure, with a projected spend of $57 million in the G21 region and $174 million in Victoria by 2029-30.

What G21 wants

Required from government:

• $15 million for essential infrastructure to support better amenity, freight and tourism access to support Spirit of Tasmania’s relocation to Geelong in 2022.
• Support in strengthening road, rail and channel links and preserving adjoining land to enable the port’s growth.

A commitment to embed GROW training, employment and procurement principles in all government projects within the region.
