G21 Regional Road Connections

Strong economic and urban growth in the G21 region is creating congestion on our regional road network.

Efficient and effective transport routes are essential to maintain the region’s productivity and liveability.

Funding is required to implement key road upgrades identified in the G21 Region Road Transport Plan (2017-27), including:

• Upgrading the Midland Highway to Bannockburn which will be home to 13,000 people by 2036 (90% increase)
• Constructing Bellarine Link (Geelong Ring Road extension) to the Bellarine Peninsula.
• Bacchus Marsh Road duplication to prevent out of sequence development in the Northern Geelong Growth Area.

G21 has received Victorian Government funding to develop an integrated region transport strategy.

This will examine gaps and opportunities in the region’s network across all transport modes: pedestrian accessibility, cycle lanes and routes, road networks for all vehicles, rail network, ferry routes and links to the port and airport.

What G21 needs

Required from government

• $265 million to duplicate the Midland Highway to Bannockburn.
• $160 million to build Bellarine Link connecting Baanip Boulevard to Portarlington Road, prioritising Surf Coast Highway connection to Barwon Heads Road.
• $25 million to begin duplication of Bacchus Marsh Road between Geelong Ring Road and Princes Highway.
• $500,000 to plan for road upgrades and improvements on the Breakwater – Moolap corridor.
• $200,000 to plan upgrades to Great Ocean Road inland routes to increase safe carrying capacity in high fire danger areas.
• Funding for transport network planning to support growth in the Northern and Western Geelong Growth Areas and Bannockburn.
• Safety upgrades to the Hamilton Highway.
